Mapping the Routes for Success

Kimble services cover a large portion of northeast Ohio, with 150 – 250 routes run every working day. Someone has to keep all those drivers and trucks moving in the right direction and in the most efficient manner. Clint and his department of six people do just that.

Updating the System

“All of our routes need to be in the system and updated constantly to ensure efficiency and safety,” says Clint, the routing and optimization supervisor for Kimble. “When we get a new contract, we often need to make new routes to account for the additional stops. We also make adjustments daily based on new information about accessibility of routes and other changes.”

Kimble drivers all follow an onboard computer system that maps out the best routes to handle their customer stops. The team Clint oversees will reroute and re-pin stops based on driver input, including updates on road construction, changed route conditions and more.

“We received about 1,000 requests from drivers last week, just to give you an idea of the volume of work,” says Clint. “The communication between the drivers and our staff ensures the routes are as efficient as possible.”

A People Person

Clint has been with Kimble for 11 years, and he enjoys working with the drivers to fix issues on the routes.

“It’s like a puzzle, so I like that challenge,” says Clint. “I also just like to help people.”

Being surrounded by others who enjoy helping people adds to his job satisfaction.

“If I were to describe the attitude of my coworkers it would be ‘positive,” says Clint. “We are all working together on this puzzle, and we get to see the outcome – so that is rewarding.”

His favorite part of the workday is when they are bouncing ideas with each other in the routing department, where it’s a team effort, and everyone is welcome to add their opinion.

Working at Kimble

Working for a family company like Kimble means a different atmosphere. One where the management truly cares about the communities where they work.

Clint says Kimble has an excellent benefits package. He likes the way the company isn’t afraid to invest in technology, citing the onboard computer system that routes the drivers and the company’s CNG trucks.

But if he were to share what makes Kimble a great place to work, he would say it’s the people.

“This is a very supportive environment,” says Clint. “Let me give an example. Right after I started working here, my son was hospitalized for 70 days. Stacy in HR called me to ask how he was doing, and she called every day after that. I had never even met her face to face at that point. We have a beautiful new office space and excellent benefits, but it’s the people who make it a great place.”

He adds that any request for assistance is met with an affirmative answer.

“You never hear ‘that’s not my job,’” he says. “If you ask someone to help out, it’s always, ‘Absolutely, let’s go!’”
